What is a bunion?
A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms on the joint near the base of your big toe. Bunions develop when the big toe pushes into the neighboring toe, making the big toe joint grow bigger and protrude from the side.
The skin covering the bunion becomes irritated and sore, causing pain and making it difficult to walk comfortably. You may also notice a bump forming on the outside of the base of the big toe and experience restricted movement.
What is hammertoe?
Hammertoe is a foot deformity characterized by a bend in the middle joint of a toe. A hammertoe bend typically affects the second, third, and fourth toe and is the result of an imbalance in the foot’s tendons, ligaments, and muscles that hold the toe straight.
You may experience restricted movement and ongoing pain in the affected toes. You may also notice calluses and corns developing where your shoes rub against the bent joint.

What causes bunions?
Bunions may be the result of:
- Arthritis
- Tight shoes
- Strenuous activity
- Structural defects
Other medical conditions may also result in bunions. Your doctor performs a full physical evaluation of your foot and may request an imaging test to confirm a bunion diagnosis and rule out other medical conditions.
What causes hammertoe?
Numerous factors can contribute to hammertoe, including:
- Improper footwear
- Injury or trauma
- Arthritis
- Diabetes
Other medical conditions affecting your muscles, tendons, and ligaments may also play a part in developing a hammertoe.
What are the treatments for bunions and hammertoe?
The doctors at Independence Foot and Ankle Associates offer comprehensive treatments for common foot conditions, including bunions and hammertoe. Initially, your doctor may recommend a change in shoes. He may also recommend wearing size-appropriate, low-heeled shoes to reduce pressure on your toes.
If you still have flexibility in your toe, your doctor may also recommend treatments including:
- Stretching exercises
- Custom orthotics
- Cushioned inserts
- Pain medications
If treatments aren’t effective at relieving the pressure and pain, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove bunions or address your toe bone’s curvature.
