What is an ankle sprain?
Ligaments hold your ankle bones together during movement, and, when they become overextended or move the wrong way, sprains happen. Sprains often occur when you twist or roll your ankle while walking, running, or playing sports.
What is an ankle fracture?
An ankle fracture is when there is a break in the bone. Fractures may range from small cracks in the ankle bone to dislocated bone fragments that pierce through the skin. Fractures may result from:
- Trips and falls
- Auto accidents
- Sports injuries
- Osteoporosis
Stress fractures may also occur from repetitive movements on the job or regular physical activities.
Sprained Ankle & Fracture Q&A
What are the symptoms of ankle sprains and fractures?
Symptoms of both ankle sprains and fractures are similar. Your doctor uses imaging tests to determine if symptoms indicate a sprain or fracture. Symptoms of both conditions may include:
- Tenderness or pain in the ankle
- Swelling or bruising
- Limited range of motion
- Inability to put weight on the ankle
In severe fractures, you may also see a visible deformity in the ankle. Fractures may also produce a throbbing, chronic pain in the ankle that remains after treating it with heat or cold applications.
What are the treatment options for ankle sprains and fractures?
Your doctor performs a physical exam of your ankle and uses imaging tests to determine the cause of your pain. Imaging tests may include:
- X-rays
- CT scan
- Bone scan
- MRI
Once your doctor determines that a sprain or fracture is causing your pain, he creates a customized treatment plan. Treatments for ankle sprains may include:
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevating the foot
Your doctor may also recommend over-the-counter pain medications to reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Using crutches to keep weight off your ankle while it heals is advisable, too.
For minor fractures, you may only need to wear a removable brace. For more serious fractures, your doctor may apply a cast to your ankle to allow the fractured bones to heal back together.
For severe fractures that may not heal on their own, your doctor may need to perform surgery using pins or plates to repair the fracture and help your body’s natural healing process.
